As God says: <em>\u201cCertainly We have honored the Children of Adam\u2026\u201d<\/em> (Quran 17:70). In accordance with this honor, humans are commanded to uphold piety and avoid discrimination, as both men and women are partners in the creation of humanity and in preserving its progeny. God states: <em>\u201cO mankind! Be wary of your Lord who created you from a single soul, and created its mate from it, and from the two of them spread numerous men and women. Be wary of God, in whose Name you ask one another, and [of] the relatives. Indeed God is ever watchful over you\u201d<\/em> (Quran 4:1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Islam distinguishes between functions and roles in a way that aligns with the structure of the family. These differences\u2014often debated or criticized\u2014are functional, relating to the responsibilities of a male as husband and father and of a female as wife and mother, each with corresponding rights and duties. God affirms: <em>\u201c\u2026and women shall have rights similar to what is incumbent upon them, in accordance with fairness\u2026\u201d<\/em> (Quran 2:228). Any preference in value is determined not by gender but by piety, knowledge, righteous deeds, and good conduct, as God says: <em>\u201c\u2026Indeed the noblest of you in the sight of God is the most God-wary among you\u2026\u201d<\/em> (Quran 49:13) and <em>\u201c\u2026God will raise those of you who have faith and those who have been given knowledge in rank\u2026\u201d<\/em> (Quran 58:11).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this way, Islam establishes and elevates the status of women, granting them rights and recognition unmatched in human history, other belief systems, or modern legislation\u2014particularly in light of the oppression and neglect they historically endured. Islam affirms women\u2019s equal role alongside men in creation, existence, and the preservation of humanity: <em>\u201cO mankind! Indeed We created you from a male and a female, and made you nations and tribes that you may identify yourselves with one another. Indeed the noblest of you in the sight of God is the most God-wary among you. Indeed God is all-knowing, all-aware\u201d<\/em> (Quran 49:13).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of worship, action, and effort, men and women are fully equal: <em>\u201c\u2026Indeed I do not waste the work of any worker among you, whether male or female; you are all on the same footing\u2026\u201d<\/em> (Quran 3:195). God accepts the deeds of both men and women equally, granting identical reward and recompense. Socially, both bear responsibility for reform and righteousness, with equal roles in enjoining good, forbidding wrong, maintaining prayer, giving zakat, and obeying God and His Messenger. God promises: <em>\u201cThe faithful, men and women, are allies of one another\u2026God has promised the faithful, men and women, gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them [forever], and good dwellings in gardens of perpetual abode.
